Licking Berlin

Berlin is a huge, vibrant city. It has more than enough distractions for every kind of tourist, and really does seem to have something to do at any time of night.
But the best thing about Berlin is that its history is pressed so firmly into your face that you could lick it. And, with Germany's famous purity laws in effect, you won't pick up any nasties in the process*

For example, I decided to meander between Kreuzberg and Warschauer Strasse, and I stumbled across some beautiful gardens following the course of the old Luisenstädtischer Canal. While this doesn't immediately scream "History!" at you, it turns out that this canal was 1st started in 1852, but the project was abandoned then restarted several times due to the upheaval that Europe was experiencing (2 World Wars, being just part of this). At some point the canal was filled in and provided the foundation for part of the length of the Berlin wall.

I have dreamt Cuba for years and finally I managed to go there!

It was like be carried 50 years ago....see things and a way of life I just heard about from my granmother's tales. A big shock considering our way of life but simpler and more genuine.

The pearls of Sicily Taormina & Eolie Islands

Day 7

Just the perfect day today, started with a warm and bright sun that gave the good morning to us and invited us to explore the lovely town of Taormina, where we had a 2 hour guided sight-seeing tour of the major historical attraction of the area. On top of that, the "crew" had more than 8 hours of free time, that they used in the best possible way: sunbathing on the beach and playing in the crystal clear water in front of Isola Bella, sitting at a bar savoring the best gelato or just doing some shopping in the little alleys of the town. It'll be our last day town, since tmrw morning we'll head towards the cape in the north coast to discover the Eolian Island, the first UNESCO natural heritage in Italy. Ready to boarding?

She take us up to Monreale where we learn about the mosaic remake of God creating man through genesis. We are then lead into another traffic jam before our lunch break. We hit the road for another two hour drive to the South coast to meet Luigi. We take a tour of the valley of the Temples where the perfectly built temple of Concordia was located and enjoyed the sunset. later we reach our hotel in Agrigento where we are reminded of America as we observe that a Mc Donalds is right next door. The group finally receives a good dinner. It turns a quiet night as the students find wi-fi and the adults remains over a couple of drinks. Buona notte!

Swaziland SA

Now the holiday starts the get real: I finally get to do some hula hooping and stay in a backpackers. Whilst I've loved the fancy rooms and wildlife, I'm looking forward to more humble accommodation. Ideally with bed bugs.

It's a long way to Swaziland, and the roads get more ridden with potholes the nearer you get to the border. But the real adventure start when you reach passport control. While the South African officials are not so bureaucratic, the boxes of free condoms available in the toilets tell you what their concerns are. Being a sensitive bunch of Western males, we each take a pack to play jokes on the others. When we realise that we are all completely unoriginal, we stash the packs (totalling around 50 condoms) in the glove compartment.

100 Days To Go SA

Time to Shine!

When you go to South Africa don’t leave home without Binoculars and a zoom lens for taking great wildlife shots. If you forgot them at home for whatever logistical reason - no matter how, you definitely need to find a replacement and that is why, instead of surfing the spectacularly gently Durban’s waves (perfect for beginners, as we are) we spent a interesting afternoon looking for a new zoom lense in the Gateway shopping centre in Umhlanga, a lovely neighborhood north of the city.

Port Elizabeth, SA and Beyond!

An interesting day was spent in Port Elizabeth, aka Nelson Mandela Bay... But that was the easy part.. Arriving there proved to be a bit of a challenge - in the quest to discover how fuel efficient we are.. 'someone' by the time we reached Port Elizabeth, kept insisting that the fuel gauge was ok, even though it was reading below the red line.. "dude, did you hear that?", "hear what?", "there it is again!", "what?... by the way why are we stopping here in the middle of the highway?!!"

Well, anyway it worked out well and we only had to push the car 200 metres as we discovered that the petrol station was luckily only around the corner! Oh yeah, and just in case you were wondering.. the car gives us just over 700k's for a tank!

A busy day running around Cape Town to sort out the last issues before pressing the rec button!
