The 8th annual Hoscar awards ceremony took place in January 2009 to recognize the best hostels in the world. Over 23,000 properties from across the globe featured on Hostelworld.com were eligible for the awards and the prizes were based on approximately 1 million votes given by the Hostelworld customers.
During the last decades there has been a growing tendency of looking for alternative ways of tourism development in order to slow or arrest the deterioration process of contemporary mass tourism.
