2010 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced the 12 finalists for the 2010 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. The winners will be revealed on May 26th celebrating the best in sustainable tourism throughout four different categories. This year over 160 entries were received from over 45 countries.

Rebuilding Haiti – the Role of Tourism Development

In the devastating earthquake of Haiti, on January 12, approximately 220 000 people died, 300 000 were injured and more than million were left homeless. The severity of this natural disaster has posed great challenges to the international community and many countries have responded to appeals for humanitarian aid, pledging funds and dispatching rescue and medical teams, engineers and other support personnel. Communication systems, transport facilities, hospitals and electronic networks were damaged by the earthquake, which has also slowed down the rescue efforts.

Number 1 Hostel in South Africa: The Backpack & Africa Travel Centre

The 8th annual Hoscar awards ceremony took place in January 2009 to recognize the best hostels in the world. Over 23,000 properties from across the globe featured on Hostelworld.com were eligible for the awards and the prizes were based on approximately 1 million votes given by the Hostelworld customers.

In a way this process can be described as a search of alternative and responsible tourism that would be an antithesis of mass tourism. One example of alternative forms of tourism is so called VolunTourism.

Geotourism Summit 2010

This year’s Geotourism Summit began today, the first of February, in Washington DC with a Geotourism ambassador training. Tomorrow, the summit continues with a general session of conversation about Policies & Practices at Work and with a presentation of the ten Geotourism Finalists of year 2009. The keynote presentation is held by James H. Gilmore, a co-author of The Experience Economy and Authenticity: What Consumers Really Want.

What is ecotourism for you?

 

There are almost as many terms to describe types of travel as there are travel companies. A couple of buzzwords that you often hear these days are "Eco-Tourism" and "Adventure Travel" . To further confuse the issue there is also "Sustainable Tourism", "Responsible Tourism", "Nature Based Travel", "Green Travel", "Multi-Sport Adventures" and "Cultural Tourism".
