2010 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has announced the 12 finalists for the 2010 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. The winners will be revealed on May 26th celebrating the best in sustainable tourism throughout four different categories. This year over 160 entries were received from over 45 countries.

The categories and the finalists are:

Rebuilding Haiti – the Role of Tourism Development

In the devastating earthquake of Haiti, on January 12, approximately 220 000 people died, 300 000 were injured and more than million were left homeless. The severity of this natural disaster has posed great challenges to the international community and many countries have responded to appeals for humanitarian aid, pledging funds and dispatching rescue and medical teams, engineers and other support personnel. Communication systems, transport facilities, hospitals and electronic networks were damaged by the earthquake, which has also slowed down the rescue efforts.

He is planning to return to the same place 10 weeks later on April 14, behind approximately 9000 kilometers on bike around the country. Through this ambitious venture Ruan is willing to contribute in creating national and international awareness of what South Africa has to offer.
