Let's try to close our eyes and imagine we happen to be in West Africa in the 60's.
A holiday in a 100% energetically independent and sustainable structure. Current electricity generated from Jatropha oil. Hot water generated from a photovoltaic system. Running water via solar pumps.

There are many ways to enjoy an apero with your friends. One of the best ones I experienced until today was in the southern hemisphere springtime, as we were visiting our friend and bride-to-be in New Zealand. If you have the chance one day to go to New Zealand, take the time to visit the Bay of Islands in the Northern part of the North Island.
A winery kayak tour, as well as a winery bike tour, is a fun way to discover an area with a reduced impact on the environment and a positive effect on the local economy. You have the time to get to know the locals, their traditions and understand better the culture and the region.
Having a local guide is a big advantage. Our guide on the tour was born and bred in the Bay of Islands and could explain us a lot about what life is there. And of course our friend, who had been living in New Zealand for a couple of years and knew already the area, could tell us many more about the country and the bottleneck, erm... bottlenose dolphins.
We travelled by car to the Bay of Islands as we were under time constraints but there are also coaches linking Auckland to Paihia. Sailing is another way to reach the area. In order to reduce our flights carbon emissions, we could contribute to carbon off-setting programs as well as pay attention to reducing our carbon footprint in our daily life.
We stayed in the Beachside campsite in Paihia which is a member of the Northland Sustainable Tourism Charter.

Living in London is a bit like living in a giant bubble, certainly filled with fun and lots to do, but still a bubble. With no car, expensive trains and beer fuelled Friday nights it’s almost impossible to wake up fresh on a Saturday and get away for a couple of days.
Riding a motorbike is probably not the most eco-friendly way to travel but redescovering nature and the beauty of the simple pleasures that it can give us, like the joy of the sun and the fresh air wile driving through a dusty road, the amazing seafood gift of the ocean and the open spaces that in the crowded city we forget exhist are all things worth remembering. Let's make sure we don't ignore the call for adventure! (...and if you make a deal "the Italian way" you get to spend a night for free in a motel, and save the water for not changing the sheets!)

Short trip to nowhere: Cycling from London to Frankfurt with more brawn then brain

Summer had started 2 weeks earlier, and I had promised myself not to spend another season locked up in an office. So I finally hedged my bets, quit my 9 to 5 job working as a trailer editor, and a day later embarked on a journey to cycle from London to Frankfurt.
Cycling a serious distance allows you to discover the true worth of a mile travelled on your own fuel. Get out of the car and onto your feet. You might not get as far, but you'll see much much more.
A newspaper under your shirt will keep you warm. If you travel with minimal resources you learn that everything and anything can be used for more then one purpose.
