Eco travel video Tips

  • Don’t be lazy and linger - keep your showers short and sweet. OR, double the fun and “get fresh” by inviting a close friend to join you under the sprinkler. Make the planet smile and shut off the water while you’re brushing your teeth.

  • To greatly reduce your impact, walk or ride a bike to explore your holiday destination. It’s far more fun planning your route and you’ll reap the benefits of all some top exercise.

  • Buy from locally-owned shops and eat in restaurants boasting local produce. You will be supporting the local community and reducing your carbon footprint while you are away. Buying local products reduces the amount of energy required to transport your products to your store.

  • Reuse your sheets and towels instead of having them changed every day. Many hotels will not replace your towels if you leave them hanging up neatly. To make sure - why not write a nice note for the housekeeping staff or notify the front desk?

  • Go vegetarian at least once a week. To produce one pound of beef requires 40 times more water than is used to produce a pound of potatoes. Before you buy beef, think about the immense cost of energy used to raise cattle and to transport meat to your supermarket shelf. Also, cows produce a huge amount of methane -- which is officially the No. 2 greenhouse gas. So get those seasonal greens down you and smile!

  • If you are a driver, put a monthly note in your diary to make sure your car tyres are properly inflated. That way, you'll help reduce your carbon dioxide emissions AND you'll save money on having to replace them prematurely. That way you'll stay right on track!

  • Using gas, rather than charcoal BBQ’s is the most environmentally friendly method of getting your grill on. By cutting out charcoal you’ll prevent forest destruction. If you must use a charcoal barbecue grill, then make sure your charcoal comes from a sustainable source.

  • Stop sending postcards and greetings cards -- and try emailing photos or SMS to save on paper, postage and the CO2 emissions from the postcard's journey. If you normally buy charity cards at this time of year, why not donate the money you save by e-greetings direct to their bank instead?

  • Please put cigarette butts in the bin! It can take an incredible 1-5 years for a cigarette to break down. And even worse, they often end up in our beaches harming wildlife and other marine life.

  • When it comes to cars, try renting more fuel efficient vehicles OR get social and car pool to reduce the number of designated drivers. Every drop of fuel saved counts!

  • Let’s respect and protect  the beauty around us! Next time you are enjoying a walking tour minimise your impact by sticking to the designated walking tracks to avoid scaring any wildlife or erosion of the land

  • When it comes to choosing the right tour operators go with those who have gone to the effort of becoming certified.

  • We throw away millions of individual plastic water bottles every day – many of which will never degrade. Switch to using a reusable water bottle and just say no to being a plastic junkie

  • Help out your hotel by providing relevant feedback about ideas for improvements and better eco-friendly management. Your recommendations will help their reservations!

  • Keep your luggage to minimum by travelling light and leaving excess packaging at home (e.g. film packets or any disposable plastic). Developing countries generally don't have waste collection services, so your packaging will end up as their pollution. Be friendly and take biodegradable soap and shampoo.

  • Be a print hero on your travel adventures and recycle the daily newspapers that hotels deliver in the morning. Every time you do this you bring “good news” to the planet!

  • If you are holidaying in a remote area where the local water is undrinkable, try to avoid buying bottled water or drinking boiled water. Go for using purifying water bottles or iodine tablets, as that way you’ll leave no waste and use no energy. H2-Ho-O!

  • Avoid using toothpaste or detergents in or near waterways. Phosphates suffocate fish and unbalance river eco-systems. So stay H2O happy!

  • When you leave the room, turn off the air conditioning; the heating and the television (remember to do this at the TV rather than via the remote!). Switch off lights and any other electrical devices before you embark on your day.

  • Carry out all your own rubbish and make the effort to pick up the litter left by less thoughtful people. No one likes a waster!

  • Offset your carbon emissions. Think about reducing the amount you fly rather than just flying the same amount and offsetting. To make it easy, travel local instead!
