sanmigueldelbala

San Miguel del Bala is a community-based enterprise, created by the Tacana people of the San Miguel community, perched on the banks of the tranquil Beni River in the Bolivian Amazon near the city of Rurrenabaque. The enterprise consists of two lodges. The first, called the San Miguel del Bala lodge, is set alongside the Beni river next to the community of San Miguel that allows our guests to explore the Tacana culture. It offers 7 Private cabins (one with a double bed, 6 with two twins), private bathrooms, a hammock hut and cultural center, a dormitory cabin for larger groups, and a wonderful restaurant where you eat all your meals by the river. Our second lodge, Caquihuara, is set deep within Madidi National Park where visitors can experience the amazing biodiversity of the Bolivian Amazon. It has three private rooms, a shared bathroom, and a nice kitchen and dining area for your meals. Both lodges have solar powered lighting, free coffee and tea, and all meals are prepared from locally grown produce and cooked with love by our specially trained chefs from the community of San Miguel. Guests will enjoy their time in our quiet, comfortable hideaway observing the vast array flora and fauna which boasts over 1,000 bird species, wild deer, jaguars and much more. A native guide from the community will accompany you on all your activities. You will find a natural pool and waterfall for hot days when you need a swim, as well as 12 trails to experience the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon.
The Rurrenabaque region has had problems with bad tourism practices in the past. Many companies have permitted the touching and even hunting of wildlife while also polluting the areas with mismanaged septic systems and waste disposal methods. San Miguel Del Bala is committed to reversing this trend through both practicing and promoting environmental, economic, and social responsibility. The lodges are all eco-friendly, built from local materials gathered in the rainforest. The food used at San Miguel del Bala is locally grown and all energy consumed is solar-powered. The lodge is community-owned and supports the local Tacana Community by making its handcrafted and grown goods available to travelers. It also encourages visitors to interact with the indigenous community through tours of the village and volunteer opportunities. San Miguel is also member of the first sustainable tourism certification program in Bolivia, Green Action.
